{"id":315,"date":"2020-04-30T18:00:12","date_gmt":"2020-04-30T22:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ajeziorski.ca\/podcast\/?p=315"},"modified":"2022-07-26T23:15:12","modified_gmt":"2022-07-27T03:15:12","slug":"11-joining-the-illuminati","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ajeziorski.ca\/podcast\/11-joining-the-illuminati\/","title":{"rendered":"11: Joining the Illuminati"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>&#8220;I don\u2019t want to belong to any club that would accept me as one of its members\u201d &#8211; Groucho Marx<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this episode of <strong>Core Ideas<\/strong>, we continue <a href=\"https:\/\/ajeziorski.ca\/podcast\/all-episodes\/\"><em>Into the Weeds<\/em><\/a> of paleolimnology with an examination of some of the not-so-secret societies and associations that count paleolimnologists among their membership.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first topic we discuss is the formation of scientific societies, beginning with the oldest national scientific institution in the world, the <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsociety.org\/\">The Royal Society<\/a> , founded in 1660. The Royal Society is &#8220;dedicated to promoting excellence in science for the benefit of humanity.\u201d&nbsp; Closer to home, <a href=\"https:\/\/rsc-src.ca\/\">The Royal Society of Canada (RSC)<\/a> was founded in 1882, with a broader mandate, to promote learning and research in the arts, the humanities and the sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"392\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/ajeziorski.ca\/podcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/one_pound_reverse.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-348\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ajeziorski.ca\/podcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/one_pound_reverse.jpg 392w, https:\/\/ajeziorski.ca\/podcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/one_pound_reverse-300x153.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 392px) 100vw, 392px\" \/><figcaption>Sir Isaac Newton was the 12th president of the Royal Society from 1703 to 1727<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the majority of scientific societies have a much tighter focus than \u201call of science and the arts\u201d, with many relevant to paleolimnology given its interdisciplinary nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>International:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paleolim.org\/\">International Paleolimnology Association (IPA)<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/limnology.org\/\">International Society of Limnology (SIL)<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Regional:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/socanlimnol.ca\/\">The Society of Canadian Limnologists (SCL)<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.phys.ocean.dal.ca\/ccffr\/\">Canadian Conference for Fisheries Research (CCFFR)<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aslo.org\/\">Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO)<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/iaglr.org\/\">International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR)<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nalms.org\/\">North American Lake Management Society (NALMS)<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Dedicated to a specific indicator group:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/isdr.org\/\">International Society for Diatom Research<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/freshwater-science.org\/\">Society for Freshwater Science<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/palynology.org\/\">AASP \u2013 The Palynological Society<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Dedicated to a specific time period:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canqua.com\/\">Canadian Quaternary Association (CANQUA)<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"360\" height=\"165\" src=\"https:\/\/ajeziorski.ca\/podcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/scllogo-v3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ajeziorski.ca\/podcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/scllogo-v3.png 360w, https:\/\/ajeziorski.ca\/podcast\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/scllogo-v3-300x138.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><figcaption>In our completely unbiased view, this is the best scientific society<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Societies vary in both interest and purpose, with different levels of activity dedicated to advocacy, journal production, and the organisation of membership meetings.
